(And why it’s not just for influencers and Insta-perfect people)

If I had a pound for every time someone told me they weren’t “photogenic enough” for brand photography, I’d probably be answering these blog comments from a hot tub in the Maldives with a glass of prosecco in hand.

But seriously — after more than 17 years behind the camera, I’ve heard all the myths and misconceptions about personal brand photography. And the worst part?

These myths stop incredible business owners from getting visible, building trust, and connecting with the people who want to work with them.

So let’s bust these five common myths about Brand Photography right here, right now.

1. “I’m not an influencer, so I don’t need brand photos”

Oh come on. If that were true, I’d have packed up my camera years ago.

Personal brand photography isn’t just for people flogging collagen powder and doing GRWMs on TikTok. If you run a business — whether you’re a coach, dog walker, accountant, maker, baker or candlestick-flaming-maker — you are the face of your brand.

Showing up in your business builds trust, and it helps your audience connect with you as a human, not just a logo.

Authenticity matters more than stock images
A survey found 88% of consumers believe authenticity is important when supporting a brand—generic stock photos simply don’t cut it.

So no, you don’t need a blue tick. You need photos that look like you and help the right people say, “yes, this is who I want to work with!”

2. “But I’m not photogenic”

Join the club. Honestly? Most of my clients say this — at first.

Here’s the thing: being “photogenic” is less about your face and more about feeling relaxed, safe, and supported in front of the camera.

Which is literally my job to help with.

I’m not just going to rock up, point a camera at you and say “smile” (how awkward). We’ll chat, we’ll laugh, I’ll tell you what to do with your hands, and you’ll be surprised at how natural it feels once we get going.

You don’t need to be a model. You just need to be you — and I’ll take care of the rest.

3. “Brand photography is too expensive”

Let’s talk about value for a sec.

Yes, professional brand photography is an investment — but if you’re using outdated selfies or hiding behind stock photos, how much is that costing you in missed opportunities?

Good brand photos can:

  • Help you feel more confident showing up online

  • Speed up your content creation

  • Build trust with potential clients

  • Make your website and socials look high-end AF

And most photographers (including yours truly) offer a few options, from headshot days to full brand shoot packages — so you can choose what works for you and your budget.

4. “I’ve already got a headshot, isn’t that enough?”

Short answer? Nope.

Headshots are great — I do them all the time. But they only show your face. What about your vibe? Your energy? The story of what you actually do?

That’s where personal brand photography comes in. We’re talking behind-the-scenes shots, you doing your thing, your products, your workspace, your personality — all the stuff that helps people get to know you.

A headshot says, “This is what I look like.”
A brand shoot says, “This is who I am and how I help.”
See the difference?

5. “It’s only for solo business owners”

Not at all.

Yes, personal brand photography often features individuals — but it works beautifully for teams and small businesses too.

Whether you’re a family-run business, a dynamic duo, or have a tight-knit team working behind the scenes, brand photography can show your people, your values, and what makes you different.

Don’t let the word “personal” throw you off — it’s really just about creating connection and showing the human side of your brand.

So, are any of these myths holding you back?

If so, I’m here to tell you: you don’t need to be an influencer, a supermodel, or loaded to have powerful, personality-packed brand photos.

You just need to start.

I’ve created shoots for people of all shapes, sizes, industries, and confidence levels — and the one thing they all have in common? They leave the shoot saying, “That wasn’t nearly as scary as I thought it would be!”

So, whether you’re finally ready to put a face to your business, or just want to feel proud of your website and social content again, I’ve got a camera and a studio ready and waiting.
